I honestly don't know. Kids are exposed to different things nowadays. I'm starting to wonder if any of them really do know what Pokemon is. The last few times I saw the kind of kids my nephews play with, not a single one of them even seemed to know about it. They didn't even seem interested in the anime. They should be around the target age. They're 7 and 5. However, I feel the best way is that if they show interest in it, then you show them what it's about and they want their own, then just start them on the most recent one there is. It'll be easier that way.

I was fortunate that my little brother ended up getting into Pokemon without me forcing it on him. He's quite a bit younger than me so it's nice to see how a child the age I was when Pokemon came out experiences the games now. He has some moderate interest in the older TV episodes but not much for the older games, which is understandable.

Depends. Back when I was little, Looney Tunes still played on broadcast television, as did the Jetsons and the Flintstones. To say they showed it to me may only be a technicality. I don't think they did it on purpose, that's just the way it was. I didn't even like too many of the old movies they had. They did introduce to oldies music, but that was the one thing I did like. At the time, though, we had an old home computer that played Atari ripoffs, and this is how I was introduced to gaming. This is not what I ended up playing, though, as we got a Genesis later and this is what I considered my true start as a modern gamer. (I was 10 by then, so I don't know how much this counts) You'll only hold them back if you use old games. It might be a good start, but you'll have to eventually use more modern ones unless you want your kids to be as much of a social outcast as everyone in the media seems to think we are.

When I got to the age where you can't act like a social retard anymore I was a mess. I wore Tom Petty tee-shirts. I didn't get any of the current references and I was awkward as shit. It took me a long time to break out of that and find my own interests that weren't completely archaic.

Obviously I'm glad he did what he did because it helped me develop a better sense of music and culture but he certainly didn't encourage me listening to music and media that was intended for my age group. Let your kid listen to Miley Cyrus if she wants to; sure it's bad but she'll figure that out eventually.

here it was all about what sport you like, if you didn't like sports you were automatically filtered over to the nerd table and played pokemon cards (middle school) or yugioh (high school)

That's not necessarily true. My sister (she is 9 now) knows plenty of stuff about pokemon. She knew about pokemon ever since she was 5-6. I even introduced her to the older generations and she liked them a lot. She has a DSI and she plays pokemon games in it.

I'm from San Francisco. If I remember correctly the main qualifiers for not being a faggot were whether you liked/played played sports or listened to current music.

I wasn't a sports kid so I had to cling to that music. At the time middle school bands that were popular were Jet, The Stokes, Linkin Park and then various rap acts like Chingy, 50 Cent and Ludacris. I hated it initially but my best friend at the time (who fucking break danced at middle school dances, instant cool kid status) introduced me to the other bay area artists which ended up being popular in high school.

But enough of my life story nobody cares.
