The only starters I ever boxed were Gen V starters because I absolutely abhorred all of them. The rest of the Gen V Pokemon were mostly fine, though.

The only reason I didn't box Gen IV's starters was because the Gen IV didn't have anything better to replace them with because almost all of Gen IV was shit.

I always use one on my first run when the game comes out, then I check online to see how people found the other two. I used Samurott in Black, found it to be a generic water type with some novelty moves like X-Scissor, then heard that Serperior and Emboar sucked hard.

Somehow managed the E4 with Serperior and Cofagrigus on W, and boxed my starter on B2.

As my first time boxing my starter it was really good at forcing me to make some bros. I ended up with a complete broteam.

Honestly I would recommend.

If you start with Piplup in Diamond or Pearl, you have every right to box your starter. Its only STAB is Bubble until Level 22 when it gets Bubblebeam.
Platinum lowered it to 18, but it's still a grind for that glorious Water/Steel-type master race.
