This is so little Bobby and Suzie don't play Pokemon for 6 hours straight with the 3D feature on. It can damage developing eyes. It's also without a hinge because little kids break shit.

Yeah, coming to think of it it is a pretty smart Idea. Its basically a 3ds that kids can throw around without really breaking anything important, but without the 3D. The name is fucking stupid though

Makes sense. Besides shoulder buttons (which Pokémon games never rely too heavily on), the hinge is always the bit of the DS to break. The price and release day are clearly for parents who'll be pestered into buying the new Pokémon for their children and want to pay the lowest they can, too.
I hope they've made the screens tougher though.

I think this is more of the way that the 3DS should have been. The 3D is pretty much useless, and I only use it for about a minute just to see what the difference is (which isn't really anything). Not to mention that a hinge based system is so risky and outdated. I'd at least like to see a sliding console. None the less, I actually prefer this console and will be picking one up when it's released (Especially since it's only $129.00)

Except it's not. It's obviously got the same processing power as the 3DS, just without the 3D functionality. It is more powerful than the DS while having the same power as a 3DS

Don't be so blind. Everything that happens on the touch screen in Pokemon can be delegated to a menu. That's mostly what the touch screen is used for: Menus, maps, status screens. Games like Phantom hourglass and wild world could easily be played with one touch screen like how >>13577984 shows.

I'd say do it. The 3D doesn't serve any technical purpose and is more of a bother and power sink than anything else. The only issue is that it doesn't fold. If you aren't planning on carrying it around in your pocket, then I'd say go for this. Not to mention that it's only $129.00 +Tax

Like anything else though, do some shopping. Go to a Gamestop and look at the display models, or ask to look at one. Get a feel for what feels right to you. While I love the 2DS, I can see where it could be combersome or have issues for some. Just make sure you know before you buy any of them.

Having to utilize two of anything so similar is the defintion of lazy, gimmicky, and backwards. It would be "as intuitive as you can get" by designing the game in such a way as to not need two screens.

By your logic, having a second scope right under the main scope on a rifle is as intuitive as you can get. Having a second knife blade right under the main blade is as intuitive as you can get. Having a second gas pedal right under the main Gas pedal is as intuitive as you can get.

Maps/menus/status screens. Yeah, really effective. Oh, and of course, when they show a flashy cutscene that is bisected by a hinge is as intuitive as you can get.

It makes my glad that you will never be able to design anything of merit.

I am looking on CEX, most games I'm looking at seem cheaper on Amazon. Then again most of the 3DS games (besides OoT) look cheaper on there.
I would badmouth them, but I've bought about fifteen old PS2 games off them this year, and everything's worked great.

you clearly haven't played enough DS/3DS games if you think it's only maps and menus that it's used for. there are ways that the screens are used simultaneously that wouldn't be possible with 1 screen.

It is intuitive but not necessarily useful unless you get into a situation where the first one breaks.
Two screens on a games console is extremely useful as the main screen doesn't get all cluttered.
Play Monster Hunter with everything on the touch screen and you'll see what I mean.

as said a million times before the second screen allows the top screen to be larger and have more going on. that alone is enough reason for single screens to be inferior. it's impossible to do this with 1 screen because everything would be smaller, and 1 giant screen would be terrible because the actual console's design would be ugly and impossible to fold.

and game design? tell me how can I simultaneously use the touch screen to interact with a different screen, with 1 screen? lots of DS games had some amazing puzzle elements because of this. again what games have you actually played?

They made a second screen because they wanted to try something new. That's it. They could've went with one screen, and just made another gameboy, but they didn't, they gave it two screens and made one of them a touchscreen, and made the DS. Also, having two screens is 'better' because it lets you display info that would otherwise require a menu or clutter the screen. Want to check your map? Instead of having to go to the menu to check it, it's right there the second screen.

Not trying to defend it (I know I wouldn't buy one) but I think I understand why they might have done this.

1. It offers a much cheaper way to play the new 3DS games.
2. If they didn't do something big to distinguish it then you'd get a lot of consumers crying about how they got "tricked" into getting a 3DS they didn't want.

I mean, how many times have your parents or someone bought you a gift thinking it was what you wanted and it ended up being the wrong thing?

I think they see it as trying to make it more available. I actually have quite a few family members who are now planning to get one of these for their kids because it is finally cheap enough and even more who wish they had waited to get one for their kids for this.

My biggest problem with all of this is I thought Nintendo had made a statement saying that they weren't going to come out with a bunch of different versions of the 3DS and now we have three.

It was but you could still use it for things, Some games even let you play mini games portably or have the screen flash when your need an item or something.
It couldn't do *much* but not many games even really utilize the DS's second screen to the point where playing it on just 2 screen would render it unplayable.

If you ask me, it's aimed at people who aren't especially into Nintendo, but want to play the new Pokemon games without forking out £130 when they'll only play one game on it, and don't care about augmented 3D.

Bobby and Susie could just turn the 3D off on their consoles. Although looking at how chunky it is, maybe it was made with kids in mind.

I don't see why people are bellyaching though, if you don't like it, don't buy it. Unless you wish you'd waited to get this one, which I can understand.

WEWY ios port was just a different game with the same story and was hardly playable because of the amount of times you would misclick and use something you didn't want to.

Ironically EYE DOCTORS have come forward saying that this is bullshit and specifically said that there's no reason 3DS would damage a young person's eyesight.

Nintendo's making the 2DS for a variety of business reasons, really. Tablet gaming is eating into Nintendo's territory, and they're not making much money off the Wii U.

The 3D is a nice attraction, but it's definitely a niche thing that not everyone wants. That's a lesson Nintendo definitely learned with the Virtual Boy. By dropping the 3D and the hinge and wrapping the whole thing in a more durable, kid-friendly tablet-esque design, they're offering a cheaper version in the hopes of moving more DS units and fighting off the threat of the iPad. That's all there is to it, and if you're reading any further into it, you've got way too much time on your hands. Go play some Pokemon instead.

Oh c'mon who even buys a 3ds because of the 3d? Most people don't even turn it on at all either to save batt or less eye strain etc. Sure some games do make good use of it but it's not like they become unplayable or turned into totally different game if you turned it off.

Nintendo dropped the ball on the Wii U' launch, but people DO understand this product. Just not the ridiculously bitter neckbeard /v/ crowd, which isn't who this version of the 3DS is aimed at anyway.

Parents will look at it and think just what Nintendo wants them to think: It's a cheaper 3DS their kids won't break nearly as easily because it's one solid piece. That's all it is.
