I don't get it. What's the appeal of 3rd gen?
It didn't have the same "flow" as gen 1+2 and added nothing to the gameplay. New Pokemon weren't all that great. I think I hated all that surfing/diving above all else.
So please fill me in. I'll gladly play through Emerald if I can see the light

Understandable, but some people thought it was awesome exploring an ocean, the only reason I didn't love the water routes was because they werent just an awesome giant ocean, but were instead weird paths made out of rocks.

I liked how varied the environments were, along with how closely it mirrored kyuushuu. That's just me.

The larger amount of wilderness and surfing made me feel like an adventurer.

The storyline of gen I was pretty linear, same with gen II. They let you go to whatever town you want and battle whichever gyms you want, but the actual storyline is very linear.

No idea how that compares to gen III, I've only played it three times.

I'm actually pretty sure Gen 3 added the MOST to gameplay out of any generation, overall.

The rest of that is all your opinion, bar maybe the surfing. There was a lot of that, but plenty of people didn't mind it.

Well to be fair, I do remember lots of parts of Gen III where you absolutely couldn't progress until you had done that part's storyline, as opposed to the first two generations where you could at least go to the other towns, catch their Pokémon, battle their gyms, etc.

ive never felt as excited for any other game than i did for gen two. i still remember going to all the local swim clubs and pools when gen 1 was around, and all you heard or saw were other youth trading pokemon cards, showing their teams on their gameboys, and arguing about whenever pokemon green was going to come out because it existed in japan. ill never forget those days of pure bliss as a youth with nothing to worry about. the older guys would battle each other and everyone would crowd around to watch what would now be considered awful battling. it was simpler then. and everything seemed larger than life. when gen 2 came out it still carried on in the same fashion, however this time everyone was shitting bricks over the new pokemon and the fact that you could actually go back to kanto. at a time in my life when pokemon was becoming "uncool" for kids my age, it was a nice treat to be able to return to world i loved a few years before. unfortunately i didnt have anyone to share my feeling with during this time, as most people moved onto yugioh, which meant that the game became more personal to just me. the hours i spent playing by myself were justly rewarded whenever i met someone who still played. i felt like the last veteran of a forgotten time. the younger kids who jumped straight into gen two never understood our love for the game because they never experienced gen one. and i think the final battle at the end between red and myself really captures the idea of moving on from the dreams of my childhood. long gone are the nights spend sleeping over friends' houses and playing together and watching in awe as someone evolved a pigeotto into a pigeot and wondering how long it would take to get my own; long gone are the nights spent in the backseat of my families car slowly awaiting the next streetlight so i could see the screen; long gone are all the dreams i used to have of being a pokemon master, as they seem too see-through to be true. at least it happened

Of corse I only leveled my blaziken, and Kyogre definately joined up on my team, but I still had a TON of fun. I remember going in not knowing shit, and rumors would spread around about what you could and can't do. We used to play on the bus, at school, at camp. Goddamn. Gen 3 was awesome. Now I lost my Sapphire and my Emerald so I'm kind of out of luck.

okay retard, EV's and IV's (DV's at the time) were things from Gen 1, but nintendo expanded IV's and refined EV's in gen 3. Going even further, they refined the berry system.

Gen 3 introduced Abilities, Natures, and new pokemon. It was also the first gen to introduce forms with Castform (does deoxys even count? how the hell does deoxys work when battling other games?)

Gen 3 also took away Day/night and timed events, which was added back in Gen 4

Then we have Hoenn itself, which is among the best regions. There's cozy towns like Dewford and Verdanturf, nice cities like Rustboro and Lilycove, and finally awesome cities like Fortree and Sootopolis. Then there's the routes, which are pretty diverse. You got your standard grassy routes as well as a desert route, a route covered in volcanic ash and a few rainy routes with thick overgrown grass. Let's not forget about the crazy shit like M. Pyre, the abandoned ship or the sky pillar. And you'll find indents in the rocks or trees all over the place where you can put your secret base. I was really dissapointed in the following generations for having less varied and fun places. Also something interesting to know; isn't a single route checkpoint in the region, giving it an open, adventurous feeling that no other region has.

All in all, Gen 3 is pretty good. Though it does have big flaws, no day/night cycle and almost no timed events. Lot's of water/underwater routes with super high random encounter rates yet no diversity in Pokemon; and the worst is the inability to transfer Pokemon from RBY/GSC. All this could be fixed in a remake; and with all the new features introduced in the last 3 generations will be integrated. And they can use spot/street pass for secret bases and shit.

Okay retard, Gen 3 does have timed events. Berries, Shoal Cave tide, and Espeon/Umbreon, Mirage Island numbers, and Pokerus going away at mignight. Just because it doesn't look like night, doesn't mean time isn't there. Why do you think the games have internal batteries?

I forget the hours for Day/Night, but it's something like from 8AM-6PM or something.

Also, Deoxys: it's form depends on the game it's in. When traded, it automatically changes. When battling another game, it appears as normal.

It's incredibly fast-paced.

No stupid tutorials, most caves etc. are very easy to get through, grinding doesn't take long, hell, even the HP bars go down fast during attacks.
This makes it much easier to pick up and start a new playthrough, and easier to continue where you left off. It's a very straightforward game.

Yes, diving is shit and all the water is shit and many movepools are shit, but it's fast, accessible fun.

Also anyone who complains about the music has no fucking clue what they are talking about and should go pour bleach in their anus.

And with the advent of 4th and 5th gen, the HP goes down quite slowly, relatively - when you attack two Pokemon at once, the bars go down one by one.

3rd gen introduced more new features than any other gen (gen 2 comes close). It also had excellent speed and the gamecube games were god-tier.

You'd win that bet. Pokémon always makes effective use of the Nintendo consoles. (Mostly referring to the main series games, although some of the spin-off games do a decent job of utilizing the hardware and other peripherals, especially when it came to console-handheld communications.)

Well I mean yeah. It isn't just that they "make effective use" of it, it's a huge fucking part of the game. There's emphasis on catching everything and you can't do that without it, not to mention countless Pokémon that only grow when traded. Couple that with the fact that any other game featuring communication between games so largely will probably never reach the popularity status Pokémon holds and it's a wonder they don't still sell stupid shit to connect systems rather than including it onboard. Lord knows they could get away with it.

For as much hate as they get for breaking away from gen 1/2's patterns, the franchise wouldn't be here today if not for some of the things gen 3 started. Could you imagine if every new game was another sequel, and you had to trek back through five regions after "beating" the game at level 20?

The main reason people disliked RSE was the lack of backwards compatibility, probably because of the mechanics overhaul (abilities, natures, new EV/IV system, etc.). Gen 2 was able to pull it off since they only retyped one Pokemon and kept gen 1's IV system.

The water routes get a different reception depending on who you talk to. Some people thought it was great, because you got to explore more and didn't just follow a straight line of rocks in the sea. Others thought it was tedious and boring since you ran into mostly the same Pokemon wherever you went.

Try it out, OP. You might like it.

I agree that Gen V didn't add much to the gameplay itself but it made some much-needed changes and fixes to the series, and sort of wraps all of the good stuff from III and IV up with a nice bow. Gen V is as much a mindset as it is a game-fix.

So, double battles were a thing in gen one and two? So, overhauled systems were a thing in gen one and two? Such as the EV/IV, breeding. I guess natures were also a thing in gen one and two? Contests? New moves? Weather conditions on the field? 60fps?

You also didn't find one out of the 135 new pokemon from gen 3 interesting? Doubtful.

People who started with Gen3 are distinctly different from Gen2. Most of the people who started with Gen2 had Gen1 games and experienced what Gen1 was like since it was so early on in the series. There isn't such as thing as "johtobabbys", their experience with the pokemon is pretty much the same as ours.

I played Gold, and then I didn't get to gen III until 2005, and I enjoyed it fine, even though I thought the late section of the game with the water based routes were poorly considered and could have used fine tuning. A few simple adjustments would have aleviated most of the problems with the water routes.

I enjoyed the music just fine.

I understand that a lot of the people who came on board with Gen 1 were entering the "lol pokeymans iz ghey" phase right as Gen 3 came out.

That being said, i don't get the seemingly hyperbolic hatred Gen 3 and anyone who fails to hate it gets here on /vp/.

I ended up going underleveled anyway, because grinding on the Victory Road was terrible
