Especially back when it was announced in 2010. Almost every movie was getting a 3D release and 3DTV was supposed to be "the next big thing . So yes, the 3D was initially supposed to be a major selling point.
But with a recent society shift, 3D movies have fizzled and many Tv manufacturers did not introduce any 3DTVs at CES this year. And have shifted to 4K.
The 3D feature was supposed to be a major selling point and they did alot of interviews talking about how necessary it was. Similar to how the WiiU gamepad is the main selling point of Wii U, and they're talking about how important the Gamepad is.
Releasing a 2D version of the 3DS is smart, but completely goes against the concept of the console.
