Why does GameFreak go through the trouble of designing pokemon that are absolutely terrible (even in casual play), when they know that every pokemon will have its fans. It's almost as if they want to purposefully let these fans down when they give their favorite pokemon the shaft.
For example. Go take a look at Kricketune.
http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-dp/402.shtml Why would GameFreak do this? It seems so cruel! It has the same base stat total of a Palpitoad, and I'm pretty sure the Palpitoad would kick its ass.
Now, I'm not saying that every pokemon should be pseudo-legendaries or that they should be ready for VGC. They should at least be competent, at least for casual play.

Kriketune is great fun in game I found out on my nuzlocke run, plus he looks pretty spiffy.

Is it weird that I beat Platinum with Kriketune in my party and not notice any weakness?

"weak" pokemon are placed in the beginning of the games most times because they gain higher stats more quickly than the stronger ones you encounter in the beginning to help players out/ also what if there wre pseudo legendaries at the beginnings of games it would give you an unfair advantage

It's simple, OP. Let's pretend every pokemon is "competent" to use your words. You start a game with a starter and you catch a Bidoof, Patrat, Caterpie, and so on. As soon as you got 6, you're done. No point catching more pokemon, your team is competent. Some pokemon are better than others so you'll want to keep catching them all during the whole playthrough. No matter how you play, GameFreak focuses on normal Story playthrough.

>>13601793 >tfw I really like Kricketune To be fair, there are few Pokemon in Unova that were THAT bad. Audino...Watchog
At least they made the early bugs good this time round.
Looks like GF has learned something.

>>13602016 >game freak focuses on normal story playthrough. while this has definitely been true the past 5 gens, it seems like this gen they are starting to look at the game competitively with the addition of things like fairy type, and mega evolutions for weak pokemon like mawile.
Anonymous
>>13602021 Why are you mentioning Unova if Kricketune isn't native to it?
Anonymous
>>13602016 I'm making my argument from a "play with your favorites" perspective. So, why would a player choose to only use those six pokemon, unless they didn't care about what they used, or if those were their favorites?
Think of your favorite pokemon, and then imagine it with the stats of Kricketune (if your favorite pokemon happens to be Kricketune, then you get to imagine Kricketune with Haxorus's stats! Yay!).

I agree with the op What is the point in creating a pokemon with stats as shitty as Kricketune or Delcatty?

>>13602167 Oh I definitely agree with you. But you must understand that weaker pokemon are required for the game to work properly. If your starting team is just as good as a team you could only build right before E4 (or even worse, only post-E4), than why would you bother with the latest ones? They`re not trained the way you want them, you're completely at ease with the team you used the whole game up to this point, and they's bring nothing to your team if the pokemon you have are all competent.
It's a shame, but some pokemon must be weaker for the stronger ones to shine later on. And hey, I love Kriketune and I'd use it anytime in a playthrough. Just not competitively. Though I'm more of a Beedrill guy.

You know what would be great? If they brought back contests, gave them an update, and had its own campaign. You could either progress through the game via contests or gyms. Basically, have something that didn't emphasize battle capabilities. And then pokemon like Kricketune could have a niche.

From a marketing standpoint it makes sense to put out cute but weak pokemon. More creatures more merchendise.

Way too many Pokemon are bogged down due to where they were located in their debut game. If it came early to mid game, it will usually forever be screwed.
