I'd prefer that too, but that doesn't seem to be the way they're going now. Mawile needed a regular evo but it got a mega instead. It is what it is.

But on a more serious note, I doubt we'll be getting regular evolutions this gen apart from maybe branch evos lie Sylveon.

I mean, if fucking Mawile, of all things gets a MegaEvo instead of a regular evolution, it's pretty safe to say straight-up evolutions won't be a thing

because gamefreak don't know for certain whether people will like megas or not. better to introduce something as a gimmick and then move on if people don't like it than make it a prominent feature and then panic

The thing that bothers me the most about Megas is how lazy the designs are.

I mean take Electabuzz, an awesome Pokémon from Gen 1. He then becomes an even cooler pokémon in Electivire that looks different but you can still see the connection.

Sure, there are a few duds like Magmortar but on overall most cross-gen evos felt like natural evolutions and had some creativity on it.

Most Megas barely change. They take the regular design and then add some more shit, modify a few details and bam, it's done (looking at you MegaAmpharos)

It's depressing to think Sableye will probably get a Mega Evo and there's a chance he might lose Prankster and become shit in the process.

And then he will sink into the depths of NU, because without the eviolite boost he could have obtained with a regular evolution he won't be able to handle the power creep and the new fairy weakness
