Ranch might have had more content (if you're into minigames), but Box had no restrictions. In Ranch, if you put a Pokemon from your Diamond game in there, you couldn't port it to your Pearl or Platinum (in the US, you couldn't use it with Platinum at all). You couldn't even port it to your Diamond card if you restarted the game. If you lost or erased your Diamond, your Pokemon were stuck in Ranch forever.
Between that and only supporting two (three in Japan) games, Ranch was pretty horrible for what it was supposed to be.
In Box, you could send and receive Pokemon to and from any Gen III game, no fuss, no muss. This is how it should be.
