Of course they are possible. There is no reason why X and Y cannot be made backwards compatible with the older games. True, you would not be able to trade X/Y Pokémon to the old games, but there is no reason you should not enable one sided transfers similar to those seen in older games.

In fact, the transfer app should be able to do free transfers locally with only a 3DS. The app is clearly capable of extracting Pokémon from the old carts and there is no reason that data could not be stored in the console's memory (something not available on the DS and earlier consoles). That data could then be transferred to X/Y.

There are ways of doing it for free. Nintendo would rather just get you to pay for the Bank. The free trial by its very nature is a temporary solution, not a long term free method of transferring Pokémon.

It's the principle of the thing. I don't care if it is cheap, you are paying for something that was once free.

I do not mind charging for the Bank (though I would not go for it myself). It is optional and servers cost money. Nintendo is justified in that regard. But making it the only option for transferring from old games is unacceptable in my book.

Why not enable BOTH? Give people the option? Those who kept their old DS or have friends with 3DS could use that for the transfer, those who do not have access to multiple DS systems or wanted the convenience of the Bank could choose to pay for it. Again, I see no reason why the transfer app could not use the 3DS internal memory to transfer the Pokémon, a free option for everyone with a single 3DS.

The 2nd Gameboy and DS you needed to own?

Only Gen IV had the ability to transfer without owning two systems, and that was because of the GBA slot architecture.

For them to replicate that, that would mean redesigning the 3DS to have a 2nd card slot.

People owned older systems or borrowed a friend's for the transfer. You didn't have to pay a subscription to keep using such a system. I do admit that if you only had access to one handheld it would necessitate buying a second one, but this is more an option for people who do have access to multiple systems already.

Another problem with Nintendo's server based transfer system is that it is entirely dependant on Nintendo maintaining the servers. The service will end one day. Who knows what the future will hold. Meanwhile the older method will continue to work indefinitely and is not dependant on Nintendo or its future business.

All I am saying is that there was no need to remove the local transfer option. And the new system could use the 3DS' own internal memory for the transfer. If transferring is really limited to the Bank, then Nintendo are needlessly locking the functionality behind a paywall for their own benefit.

You're still mistaking the fact that you were inclined to buy an older system or happen to have a friend as a convenience. This is literally five dollars a year, meaning you will be DEAD before you have ever come close to paying the cost of a system off by giving Nintendo five dollars of your money.

not to mention, this is being done to build a framework for them to let Pokemon be kept forever, to avoid creating a situation like the one between Generation II and III where you couldn't keep your old Pokemon because of the way the different technology worked.

What's more important, instant gratification now, or creating a future where your Pokemon are yours, forever, all for the cost of five dollars once every 365 days?

Yes, of course, the service will end. And that will be the day when they stop making Pokemon games at all, and you won't have a game to transfer to anyway.

Dude, think for a moment.

This is going to be cloud storage, right? Do you know how much Cloud storage costs a MONTH?

15 dollars a month, as opposed to Pokemon Bank's 5 a year.

That's 180 dollars a year.

Nintendo is doing the same thing, for 1/54th of the cost, JUST for one video game series.

If anything, they will be LOSING money on this.

I do understand the benefits and convenience of the Bank system. I am NOT against the Bank or Nintendo charging you to use the service, and I do not think the price is unreasonable. I am against the use of this subscription service to the exclusion of all other transfer functionality between the older games and X/Y. I do not understand how anyone can want LESS functionality and fewer options.

I really doubt Nintendo are losing money on this. Pokémon data is so small it could be considered insignificant by modern storage standards, so the only real concern is the traffic on the system. People will not be transferring Pokémon 24/7 for the year, and it's not as if Nintendo have to pay $15 for each customer using the service. The cost of running the hardware and software will be divided between each customer. There is also the revenue from sales of the games themselves too, but I doubt Nintendo even need that to operate this service. They managed to operate Nintendo Wi-Fi and Global Link without a subscription, after all.

Of course your old system will not work forever. But my Game Boy has been working for well over a decade and will hopefully continue to operate in the future. Nintendo's business could implode tomorrow and I would still have access to it and could use it for transfers (shame about the old cartridge batteries). If Nintendo allow both systems, then if you loose access to one for whatever reason, you still have the other. If they lock you into one, then you are entirely dependant on it...
