Truthfully, you can use anything to beat the game. I beat HG with teams of three (first time was feraligatr, ampharos, and espeon, second time was typhlosion, victreebel, and espeon). If you really want to use a team of six, I'd recommend (in addition to totodile):
Ampharos
Espeon or Umbreon
Jumpluff or Victreebel
Scyther/Scizor or Heracross
Pidgeot, Noctowl, or Crobat

Dragonite is also good but playing through the game with 2 pseudos is a bit harder to do because of the extra training needed to get the evolutions, but it's worth it if you're willing to put the work in

Typhlosion
Kadabara
Machoke
Graveler
Ampharos
Lapras

Pidgeotto is more of an alternate, but i'll need to start using him seeing as evolves in three levels.

At the Elite 4, but won't proceed to challenge them until a friend of mine gets back to town so I can evolve Kadabara, Machoke, and Graveler

If you don't mind spending a long time searching, Heracross is bro-tier. It wrecks absolutely everything that's up to 5 levels higher than it (assuming that it does have a Flying move). Serene Grace Dunsparce is also pretty good.

Most of them are uncommon pokes and it took me a while to get 'em (it took me 30 mins to get Rhino), but i wanted to try this playthrough using pokes that i never or rarely used.
Most of them have no evos but it still was great fun beating the game, now i'm going for the other 8 badges..
The only problem was flying around: i had to catch a random Spearow and teach it fly just because Schyther can't learn it...

I would've gotten a Rhydon but somehow Lavitar was easier to catch than a Rhyhorn. Pretty much any team is fine until you realize that you're probably really under leveled for the Elite Four.

if you can get the pokewalker then:
Feraligatr
Vileplume
Golem (gravelar is still fine if you can't trade)
Magmortar (if your'e willing to give up the magmarizer from another game, otherwise magmar is still strong enough)
Red Gyarados (HM slave that is still useful due to waterfall)
Dodrio (from the pokewalker)

if you can't use dodrio then crobat is the next best bet

trick to getting a vileplume early enough is to win the bug contest until you get a leaf stone
