I used to think water was super effective against steel (because of Aron)
as well as it not being very effective against bug (due to it being close to grass type)

Trolling aside, growing up with Gen 1 is basically a guarantee that you had misconceptions. Everyone thought Rock was immune to Electricity, and that Psychic was immune to Ghost (although technically not incorrect for the first games) as well as the fact that the "Super Effective!" message in the original games was glitched and would display incorrectly at times.

I still have issues remembering how Psychic, Bug, Fighting, and Ghost all interact. Why are Bug and Fighting both weak against each other? Why is Bug weak against Ghost and strong to against Dark?

Seems to me like Psychic types should see all these dirty, back-handed tricks coming, and that Fighting types...well I always pictured a very formally trained, very serious Pokemon, who isn't used to making up rules as it goes along.

Now I try to remember it by thinking of a Dark type reaching over and tapping a Fighting type's opposite shoulder to try and get him to look the other way, but the Fighting type just fucking drills him in the face in a confetti explosion of teeth and tears.

Coincidentally, both Poison and Bug used to be SE against each other in Gen I, but now it's bug is NVE against poison, and Poison is neutral against bug.

Ghost used to also do jack shit to psychic, and even up to Gen 3 ghost attacks were stupid ESPECIALLY against psychic types, because the best ghost was ghost/poison AND ghost was a physical type while that same ghost/poison pokemon excelled at special type
