I just realized this is going to be my first mostly blind Pokemon playthrough.

Even with Red and Blue I had the anime and that magazine with Turok and Link on the front and the big like 8 page full Pokedex.

How old are you? I got introduced through the anime. Though I didn't get internet until I was 14 and I didn't subscribe to any game magazines. I might have gone into Silver pretty blind though because I still didn't really follow any websites.

This. I think it's a good thing that we don't know everything about this game. But the whole "knowing anything about X and Y will spoil the whole game for me" is probably the most stupid movement I have ever seen on the internet. Game Freak wanted people to know these things before hand, I guarantee some of those faggots will be buttmad about many of the new things in these games.
