I've gotta know; does ANYONE like the Fairy Type? I mean, it'd be at least OKAY if it made any fucking sense, but they're just slapping it on any pokemon they think is cute. Why would being cute change your element? What about Marill or Mawile makes them Fairies? I mean, at LEAST Gardevoir is humanoid and "magical" [see: psychic], but Marill and Mawile just make no fucking sense.
Another thing, what the fuck are Fairy Type moves going to be? Just stuff like Sweet Kiss and Charm, or what?

But yeah, I love Fairy, because I'm pretty sure GF knows that fairies aren't all about being adorable little Tinker Bells. They're mischievous and sometimes malicious; I see them as a more fantastical counterpart to Ghost

Also, Xerneas is my favourite legendary since Celebi. Who, coincidentally, may become Fairy-type as well

If I asked you which Pokemon are "undead," there'd be some Pokemon you could name that fit that criteria (Ghost) while others wouldn't right? It's a bit like that. The same applied to the Steel typing, but when it came out, there was only the Magnemite like that it retroactively umbrellaed.
If I ask you which Pokemon are fairy like, you could probably name some-- the new typing seeks to solidify that by distinguishing between fairy and not-fairy.
It's only because we see the weakness chart as a un-amendable proof that the fairy typing seems odd.

Dissonance between languanges. We have a multitudes of descriptors for our fantastical beings. Japan also has a multitude of descriptors for their fantastical beings.
The problem is that they're absolutely terrible at understanding the nuances between terms, much like how an average westerner would probably not be able to tell the difference between an ayakashi or a yokai.
Heck, they still use Thunder to mean Lightning.

So they went with Fairy (and in my opinion, mythical tells nothing about the actual Pokemon, rather than what -people- think about them). I'm guessing NoA found it suitable enough and kept it, seeing as only the "Evil" type was changed.

Didn't you ask why mouses were being called fairies? I gave you a reasonable answer. Also, they're not regular mouses, otherwise they'd just be normal type, and also the only freaking mouse that's been officially typed as fairy is marril. You just assumed the rest but there's no way Emolga or Pachirisu will become fairies just because.

This would normally be fine but all the shit they're covering could've been fixed by just updating CURRENT type match ups.

The only possible reasoning I can come up with for Marill, is that Azumarill is some kind of Easter Bunny (with an Easter Egg for a body), and the Easter Bunny could *sort of* be considered to be a fairy.
But if that's the case, why not just make Azumarill a Fairy? Marill doesn't need to be one.

Mawile is a futakuchi-onna, like others have said, which is a type of yokai, which might as well be the Japanese equivalent of a fairy.

Now, Jigglypuff on the other hand... what the hell does that have to do with being a Fairy? Is it just because of the Moon Stone, or because it's pink and cute, or what?

Tons of pokemon have types we've just come to accept because they've always been that way. At the absolute best they're loosely connected to something in a very shallow way.

Marill is a cute little jolly mouse rabbit thing. That's enough to warrant it a fairy typing is that's the flavor behind the type.

Let me explain what's wrong with the Fairy type: Every type is based on a general "element", like fire, water, poison, steel, dark, psychic, and so on.
With Dragon types, however, it's more specific than a general element. The reason it can exist, though, is that everyone has a general idea of what a dragon looks like. Look at Dragon-type pokemon. They all look dragon-y, or at least evolve into something dragon-y.

The problem with Fairy type, however, is that Fairies are completely different creatures depending on who you ask. In some lore, Fairies are cute little happy circles of light. In some lore, Fairies are little flying demons that cause mischief. Do you see the problem? There's no general idea of what a fairy is.

3. Sneasel is based on a Kamaitachi, a yokai from Nagano, which is a pretty cold place. They even had the Winter Olympics there a while back.

Marill on the other hand, is a mouse with a buoy for a tail. It's pretty watery, but I don't see anything fairy-like about it.

Flying makes more sense than wind or air though. The only wind/air themed pokemon is Tornadus, who's also conveniently the only pure flying type. Everything else is either "some thing that can also fly" or Gyarados. I'm not sure how he fits in there though. Water/Dragon would be a great type for him. Fuck Kingdra, it's wasted on it.

To be honest, I don't care much about egg groups. Neither do most people. All I really care about is what pokemon slammed together in the daycare make neat moves.

It doesn't make sense that they're in that group, either. And just because it is doesn't mean it should change what the entire pokemon's element is.

At this point, maybe you should think the other way around... Gamefreak is trying to define what's fairy to them.

So, some will fit with already known creatures, like Flabébé, and some will be their take on their definition, like Marill and Dedene, since they clearly share so many traits.

It makes sense, by fairy you don't have to imagine those little girls with wings but the spirits of the nature and the magical stuff. It would have make more sense if it was called nature or youkai type but that would have caused confusion for most of the people. Also in various stories fairies help to fight against the evil and dragons.
I agree thar Dedenne being is pretty stupid, but a lot of pokémon would make sense being fairy type, like Exeggutor (tsurube otoshi), Mawile (Futakuchi-onna) etc.

Fairy type isn't cutesy at all. Fairy type are a nod to various culture's fae. First rule of fae: they're usually hostile to humans, either out of malice or out of just having really weird thoughts.

Mawile, for example, is actually based off of a japanese demon of a woman with two faces who eats her husband. Fairy type fits well.

Don't trust fae. Don't trust Fairy type pokemon. Even if they beckon for you to approach.

I see a lot of potential in it and it may become one of my favorite types.

However, I really hope that the new fairies being shown are almost all incredibly cutesy either for the sake of marketing or just because they aren't fully evolved. More Gardevoir and Xerneas, less Flabebe and Marill.

Not that there's anything wrong with cute Pokemon, but if 90% of the type turns out to be like a miscellaneous "cute" group I'll be sort of upset, if only for wasted potential.

I think I share this opinion with quite a few people, at least on /vp/.

Not to mention most of the cutesy Pokémon usually end in the lowest of the low tiers. So far only Azumarill and Mawile seems to benefict from the type, Gardevoir is not gonna get such luck if the type is not gonna have some really good resistances or immunities.
Ideal would be immunity to Dark and resistence to Dragon, I can't really see Fairy being immune to Dragon but I can see it making sense for Dark, both because of their mischievous nature and for the ability in fables to dispell evil. In Japan the Dark type is even called Evil type.

I'm okay with a fairy type in general. I think there needs to be a mystical/fey type of tricksters and aberrant-thinkers that are strong against the otherwise-strongest type, and to which that type is weak. It would also be nice for poison to have another thing to be strong against.

I'm also okay with them slapping it on little cutesy pokemon, which further undermines the "big tough dragon-types".

I think that small, easily-underestimated mons playing on the ego and narrow-thinking of larger, often-superior mons is a thing that needs to happen.

It remains to be seen if the moves are going to be gay or actually interesting.

For the Xillionth time, Dark isn't Darkness, it is closer to evil or underhanded brawling. You'd have to make fire resist Fighting too if you made it resist Dark. Then by that point, Fire is OP.
