One day when helping out at the local ranch he runs into James and -suspecting Team Rocket shenanigans- prepares for trouble. James backs away, insisting that he doesn't use his pokemon for battling or theft anymore, but Brock's provocation begins to anger him.
James and Brock have a pokemon scrap at the ranch, destroying much of the property and getting James fired. As they wind down later and begin to bond over some drinks, James notices the missed call from Jessie and confides in Brock that he misses her bossiness more than anything. Brock is apologetic after making James lose his job, and offers to travel with James to Kalos in search of Jessie, knowing that Ash is also there. They enjoy some jelly donuts and leave.
