To me, the type alignments are all that's important. Everything else, it's far too inconsistent across the franchise. Even if you want to believe the games take precedence, the logic doesn't add up. I prefer to think everything approved as a Pokemon product should define it. Unfortunately, the media won't agree on what is the proper portrayal. Therefore, I believe it to be up to personal discretion. You're supposed to fill in the blanks yourself, not take the game so literally.
