My theory is that the Mom would be the champion, she's in financial security however the world wasn't safe due to the potential natural disasters that could occur, she wanted her child safe so she took up the role as a Magician to disguise herself and to avoid impressing her child, by looking androgynous as possible to avoid connecting the dots. (the X and Y thing)
Eventually she became champion due to her bravery and whatever, also breaking one of her hands in a landslide (she hides it under a glove) however due to the lack of parents being around, that child looked up to her disguise as a rolemodel.
As the main character progresses through the region, he hears about the mysterious trainer's exploits of the past from other people, climbing up the Gyms, eventually they do beat her....and falls into tears when they see her shed the disguise. (Nature vs Nurture, something psychological?)
