>>13701663I'm willing to overlook the Pokemon dying part as long as the grieving isn't too drawn out. My real problem is when it clashes with the tone of the series. It's like, "haha Groudon and Kyogre fight each other by making silly faces at each other, and then Rayquaza comes in with a photoshopped meme face and they run away! So funny xD! And now...oh, wow. May almost succeeded in a suicide attempt brought on by Hale telling her to do it in response to her killing his sentient walking blob pet, all because of her crazy love. Said love was which played for comedy right up until that moment. Deep character drama, bro ;-;"
The sequel got left hanging before it could continue, but it looks like it would have been the same had it gone on. Barry's interpretated as someone who physically abuses Bern, and has lived all her life in fear of him. And it's not played for comedy at all like Yandere May originally was. All while Looker's faces are being drawn like they were from the Zelda CD-I games. FUN.
A lot of Nuzlockes in general just suffer from this problem. The story of Pokemon is too simplistic and light-hearted. As a result, authors end up creating dark subplots revolving around their self-insert in order to keep things interesting. But it just doesn't hold, because as said before, it's fucking Pokemon and it clashes with the sillier segments of the comic itself.
The only truly good nuzlockes are Freddie's and the original. Freddie is almost always cartoony, and it works really well with the Pokemon. Pokemon don't die often because Freddie isn't bad at video games, but when they do, they're given only a few panels of grief before we move on. Everything else is pure silly comedy, sometimes set to awesome music. The original does have its overly serious moments, but it's not that often and at least the non-serious moments are still pretty funny.
