They're completely dependent on your bond with the pokemon. If you dont use Amie to strengthen the bond the megaevolution fails and costs you a turn.

yeah, this is clearly why there are individual mega stones for each mega evolution instead of just one mega stone for everything. so mewtwo will have two different mega stones.
