I took a couple of things into account, when I decided this. Mainly, things that I like, things that would realistically live in my area, things that would actually be readily available to me, and things that I would definitely not want.

As much as I would love to have a Litwick, Lampent, or Chandelure on my team, those things DRAIN YOUR SOUL. That's just terrifying. I'd also like to have a Blaziken, but my lifestyle just wouldn't be able to support such an active, energetic fighting Pokemon, which I would likely need to spar with to keep him in good shape. And while Gyarados would be another awesome addition to my team, he's HUGE and SCARY. Nope.

Victini would be the bro-tieriest of bro-tiers, and would definitely be in my party, if it weren't for the fact that it's incredibly illusive, and literally legendary. If I even managed to ever see one throughout my lifespan, I would likely be unable to catch it, or even battle it for that matter. If what's shown in the anime rings true, I would also not likely have a starter Pokemon. They seem to be incredibly rare, and not many people are really given the privilege to own one. Plus, the area that I live in is REALLY unlikely to have any kind of lab in it, where I could obtain one.

I live in a heavily wooded, yet somewhat marsh-y area so, I based a lot of my decisions on that. The only one that doesn't /really/ fit the bill is Reuniclus. However, in the BW/BW2, Solosis can be found in a nice little wooded niche, that's sort of near a city, just like my area. Although, in the BW movies, an army of Solosis/Duosion live in that huge tower, and there's not really any ancient towers or anything similar, or even ancient ANYTHING nearby. So, a couple of things are brought up by this.

I'd say it's more likely to be the latter. In the Pokedex, it's also mentioned that because they're in that gel, they can survive in practically any area. Bulbapedia also mentions, "It is able to live in any kind of environment, but is usually found in places with mild weather", and the weather in my area is pretty mild.

Anyways, a really common animal in my area is the raccoon. I would imagine, if our world were to contain Pokemon, instead of animals, it'd be highly likely that I'd be swarmed by Zigzagoon, instead of Raccoons. The same principle applies to Crobat with bats, and Farfetch'd with ducks. I almost didn't pick Heracross, because it seems to be based on more of an exotic beetle, than one I would generally find around my area. However, looking into it some more, I found that Heracross just generally preferred to be in heavily wooded areas, which describes my area pretty well. Like Heracross, Sudowoodo also seems to tend to be around heavily wooded areas, probably so that it can actually make use of its camouflage.

I've always had a soft spot for things with wings, and Crobat and Farfetch'd easily fall under that category. When I was little, I used to always "collect" (put them in jars and then let them go soon after) bugs, so Heracross was an easy choice, for me. Behavior-wise, all of the Pokemon I listed really appeal to me. Heracross seems pretty bro-tier and loyal, Farfetch'd tend to also be loyal (Which calls to mind that oooold episode of Pokemon that I remember, where the kid had a Farfetch'd, which he found years ago, injured, and he nursed it back to health. From that moment on, they were bros4lyfe) and a little bit quirky at the same time, which I really like. I remember Brock having a Sudowoodo in the show, and I also remember it being really friendly, and somewhat comedic/awkward, which I love. Design-wise, Zigzagoon, Reuniclus, and Heracross are just plain adorable, in my opinion. Sudowoodo looks kind of awkward, but I dig it. Crobat and Farfetch'd, as well as Heracross are really cool-lookin'. Finally my own personal experiences with these Pokemon are ultimately why I chose them, over others. Back when I used to do the daily nuzlocke streams here on /vp/, one of the first Pokemon I picked up in my Emerald playthroughs was a Zigzagoon. Now, before this, I'd never really payed any attention to Zigzagoon. It was just another regional mammal that I didn't really care for. To make matters worse, I always allowed the chat to name my Pokemon. Unfortunately (at the time), the name that was gracefully chosen was 'Jizzfish'. Right off the bat, I really wasn't enjoying my first catch. The more I used it, however, the more I (and the viewers) fell in love.

As much as I love dragonite and all, i don't think it'd be realistic to own a dratini. I don't know where you could find one?

Starly as a lot of different birds are found around my area.
I'm pretty outgoing and make friends quickly in real life so I don't know what kind of trainer class I would be.
I'm kind of spooked by bugs though so I don't see myself owning a Galvantula even though it's cool and Beedrill and Vespiquen would really wig me out

Most of my team was already dead, and the run was looking pretty bleak. In a last-ditch effort to keep myself in the game, I traveled to a place I hadn't been before, to try to catch a new bro to add to my dwindling team. When I came across Farfetch'd, I was stricken by grief. This was the end. I needed some ultimate badass Pokemon to pull me through, and this is what the game had given me instead. I expressed my grief to the chat, and they quickly informed me of the changes that had been made to Farfetch'd, in the mod. Suddenly, things were looking a lot better for me. I proceeded to catch it, and allowed the chat to name it. The name they chose was 'DrayOfHope', after the creator of the mod, Dray. DrayOfHope proceeded to sweep the upcoming gym all on its own, and I've loved Farfetch'd ever since.

As for Reuniclus, I simply just fell in love with the Pokemon at first sight. The moment I saw it, I thought, "I need this". I caught and trained one, and it stuck with me for the rest of the game. A Reuniclus was the first pokemon that I've ever properly IV bred, EV trained, and raised to level 100. Back in the G/S days, I was still a kid, and I didn't like grinding very much at all. For that reason, the entire beginning of the game, the only Pokemon in my party was my trusty bro, Feraligatr. Then, I came across Sudowoodo. Now, before I had ever touched a Pokemon game, I was a HUGE fan of Dragon Warrior Monsters 2: Cobi's Journey. In this game, there were certain boss monsters that you would have to face, in order to progress the plot. These monsters differed from the others in that they actually appeared in the overworld instead of being a random encounter, as would be expected. These monsters generally made up my team in that game, being that they were pretty damn powerful. When I came across Sudowoodo, my mind immediately sprung back to those boss monsters. If this Pokemon is just sitting there in the overworld, it must be pretty damn powerful. I remember saving, before fighting him to ensure I could catch him. After doing so, he and Feraligatr were pretty much my entire party for the rest of the game, and I quickly became attached to Sudowoodo. Last, and probably actually least is Crobat. I've never really had any truly special Crobats, but I tend to always have one, nowadays. They're cooler than most regional birds, in my opinion, and I always need a flying type, so I keep one around and it normally does pretty well by me.

So yeah, that's that.

By the way, OP, what makes you say you would have a Gyrados? Just curious. Like I said, I'd be pretty terrified of those things, if they existed.

I'd have a Ninetales since quite a few foxes live in my area and they are my favourite animal.
A Shaymin because I have a tonne of hedgehogs in my garden.
Venomoth because moths constantly keep flying into my house and I constantly keep putting them outside.
Chandelure is a good choice because I'm afraid of the dark.
Marshtomp because there are also a lot of marshes around where I live.
Talonflame because of all the red kites.

Trying to think of the environments and wildlife of my home.

I live on an island so the ocean is a great source. I'd most likely catch a Krabby or Seel playing around in the surf, but I'd try to do some real deep-sea fishing and catch a Chinchou.

The abundance of palms would make finding some Exeggcute pretty easy.

I'd easily catch a Hoothoot.

I'd become bros with a Geodude up in the dormant volcano

I would jam with the Kricketots at night.

the slowpokes-bro-and king are because im lazy and relate/ like them a lot, and they are my favorite pokemon (basically they would fit right in my household) and the mightyena is because its my favorite dog pokemon (i also have an emotional tie to him form one of my most heart-wrenching nuzlockes)

The one thing about this question is that real life pokemon would be terrifying and or extremely dangerous, this cuts out a lot of my favourites e.g. Houndoom, neverending pain from a burn doesn't sound too good, even if they could be used in battle you'd end up torturing others. Irl Houndour/doom and other dangerous pokemon would be hunted to near extinction and kept in reserves for dangerous animals.

I live in Scotland and would probably travel it like a region, I'd start at home the beach and probably travel the coast, ocasionally heading inland, wrecking the gyms, catching pokemon and visiting islands like Arran and Orkney (legends like islands).

I'd probably leave home with a dog pokemon such as Lillipup or Growlithe and head south to catch a Deerling, possibly Tauros because of all the dairy/beef farms.

I would know I'd need a water type at some point but a lot of ocean related crap scares me so I'd hold out for something more normal like a Dewgong, Oshawott Lapras, or Wailmer(plenty of coast/lochs for the use of Wailord).

I could catch some ice/rock/steel types in the mountains, possibly Snover, Skarmory, Excadrill or Aron.

And thats pretty much all I can be bother to think about at the moment.

Houndoom - I own a dachshund, and houndoom is probably the closest Pokemon to one.

Sawsbuck - Deer are everywhere in this area, so I'd totes have one. Winter form for maximum badassery.

Tauros/Miltank/Bouffalant - Cow farms everywhere in my area.

Honchkrow/Persian - There's a pretty god damn shady city nearby, so I'd probably pick up one of these because of it.

In game early bird - My dad really loves bird watching...so I'd probably end up with one of these. Staraptor would be ideal, but knowing my luck I'd probably end up with a fuckin' Pidgeot or something.

Ninetales/Politoed/Abomasnow - Oklahoma has pretty intense, volatile weather, so I'd probably end up picking one of these along the way. Most likely Politoed because rain shit hits us the worst.

If I was a trainer, I wouldn't base my team on any of those. If I wasn't a trainer, I'd probably have a pet Meowth though, since cats are my favorite animal and I had 3 cats growing up.

Where I live, I could also argue that geodudes/charmanders/bulbasaurs/squirtles/pikachus are all also present, but I decided against picking them. Geodude almost made it onto the list rather than wooper, and it would have made for a better team, but oh well.

I'd grab a ponyta as soon as I could.

We have plenty of birds where I live, but I don't think I'd get any to start with. If I did, it'd be a spearow.

OP here, assumed that this thread 404'd shortly after I posted it. I'm jealous of everyone posting their reasoning so here are mine.

Slowbro: Grandfather lived right on Boston Harbor so as a kid my cousins and I would go down under this dock/ beach area and catch crabs and hermit crabs I assume that at a young age I would have found a slowpoke and befriended it making it effectively my starter.
Chingling: I always have small bells attached to my keychain and they jingle when I walk. People recognize me for it and I am sure a chingling would hear and follow me becoming my friend.
Ninjask: As a child i found a cicada in my pool and thought it was the coolest thing. I kept it in a large container for the longest time and ever since I have been fascinated by them and love finding them.
Lampent: My mother's side of my family has a heightened ability to see ghosts and I have a "special" relationship with lamps.
Blastoise: A few years ago I caught a snapping turtle with my bare hands and brought it to a party and everyone loved it. I kept it safe that night and even fed it. It would have probably been a wartortle and I probably wouldn't have released it the next day if it was. Also squirtle is my favorite starter.
Gyarados: My biggest hobby is fish-keeping, specifically keeping aggressive large fish, like oscars, catfish and gars. Currently I have a spotted gar and a goldfish that survived it's maw as a tiny thing.It has since grown and lived with my gar. He has the same shape and color as a Magikarp so I wouldn't e surprised if he evolved into a gyarados especially after gaining exp from surviving my gar. I even call him Magikarp. I could handle a Gyarados based on my experience with large fish.

If I had a pick at any starter from Gen I to V, I would've likely chosen Squirtle. I'd have been too intimidated to choose any of the Fire starters and Squirtle's just familiar enough to a regular relatively-harmless animal that I'd be comfortable with.

If I were able to obtain them, I'd definitely choose Rotom and Eevee, because I value versatility. Rotom is able to change form and can even turn into a refrigerator which would be pretty useful on long journeys. Eevee is, like Squirtle, close enough to a real world animal for me to identify with and is soooo kawaii. I might eventually evolve it into an Umbreon to deal with spooky Ghost-types.

For the next two I'd choose Lilligant and Durant. Lilligant's access to that Own Tempo-Petal Dance-Quiver Dance is killer and it's a lovely non-threatening flower. She might even be an interesting conversation starter to some ladies on my journey. As for Durant, it has access to quite a few moves, is the speediest Bug/Steel type, and is small enough for me to feel at ease. It, along with Lilligant and Hydreigon are probably my favorite Gen V Pokés (obviously too fucking scared to pursue a Hydreigon if I'm afraid of Fire-types).

And if I was able to round out my team with him, I'd go with Mew. Mew's been my favorite Pokémon forever and to team up with him would be a dream come true. He has access to virtually every move and has a perfect 100 stat spread across the board (and to reiterate, I value versatility). I can't think of a better protector than the one Pokémon argued to be the rarest. I have endless fond memories hearing about Mew, reading about Mew, watching Mew, and speculating about Mew. He represents my childhood pretty much. If Pokémon were really real, I would probably pursue a Mew to the ends of the Earth with the borderline-manic determination of a shiny hunter.

So yeah:
