1. 2edgy4me. It's everyone's first "dragon" and people just like it because it looks so badass when there are more interesting designs around.

2. Competitively bad. As people think badass = strong, they just whine, cry and complain when they see their favorite pseudodragon in lower tiers. Truth is it's really bad, and stones got nothing to do here. It has a bad typing along with regular stats and movesets. Hopefully Mega Charizard will fix that as it now has a niche, plus improved Speed + Sp. Atk.

It gets KOed by water and rock moves, both being pretty common nowadays on the higher tiers. Even so its defenses are pretty poor. I've never seen a charizard being able to live more than 2 our 3 turns while doing something useful.

1. Charizard has a terrible fanbase. The worst of the worst gravitate towards it.

2. It's not that good battle wise, it's stats are nothing spectacular, it's typing is pretty bad, and it's movepool is pathetic.

3. Gen 5 introduced Volcarona, which is basically Gamefreak going "What if we made a Charizard that didn't suck"

Competitively it's not really good because of it's weakness to Rock, Water, and Electric, all of which are very common types. The highlight of its career was GSC and even then it wasn't that good. Also, terrible genwunner fanbase.

I still like Charizard though, I just don't use him in competitive battles. If I wasn't planning on using the event Torchic, I totes would have picked him as the Kanto starter in XY.

I just don't like the design very much. It's inferior to dragonite as far as european dragon designs go. It's kinda plain (though, to be fair, not that plain compared to some other gen 1 pokemon).
Competitively it doesn't have much of a use either. Yeah sun sweeper with solar power but it's still kinda slow and if your sun goes down it's useless. also stealth rocks.

However I really like MegaCharizard's design, which I think makes it more unique and interesting.

A weather inducer is expected to switch a lot. Mega Charizard loses half its health from Stealth Rock. You can do the math from there.
