Did I just happen to roll a bad starter or is this thing always super weak?

I decided to pick grass for a change and it was by far the worst starter I've ever used, I've never had one faint so much. It looks cool and all, but it was so weak I had to box it.

Samurott on the real deal was much better

How did you use it?

If you're playing B/W, run a physical set using Coil, Leaf Blade, Return, and something of your choice. It'll take a while, but it'll be usable.

If you're playing the sequels, the move tutors give you a little bit more coverage with special moves, so run a special set with Calm Mind.

It shouldn't be too hard, the first time I beat B/W was with Serperior, and I did it the six-year-old way, with only my starter.

It IS the game on hard mode though, Emboar and Samurott are much easier to use, and only Samurott isn't easily replaceable.

Meganium wasn't that bad in the original G/S/C, though its underwhelming in the remakes.

That may be it, I rarely bother with defense in single player since you can usually just hack and slash through everything. Maybe one day I'll try it.

Isn't that just boring though? It's the same sort of thing every time.

If you wanted something along the lines of a Fire-type, the closest you get is Sceptile, and it really can't play that role in its debut game.

Torterra is a tank; the closest you get to a tank as a Fire-type is Emboar (and that's laughable).

Sceptile is a special sweeper.

Why the hell would you use it offensively? It's a defensive pokemon. Use it to leech seed/glare/toxix opposing pokemon. Don't try to attack with it.

It's always easiest with Water-types, because of getting that Surf. Though I beat Blue with Venusaur instead, and it was crazy easy because of how good Venusaur was and is.

Because in-game, sweeping is what works. Also, OP is a Fire guy, and that's what always works for them.

A sort of neat perspective on type archetypes. It's probably hardest to use Grass.

Oh I use other starters too occasionally, it does get boring using the same thing over and over (especially with it being fire/fighting every freaking time). Fourth gen I used Torterra exclusively though, it's too awesome not to.

I ran a Leech Seed/Coil/Leaf Blade/Dragon Tail Serperior in my playthrough. Coil repeatedly, Leech Seed the opponent, Leaf Blade after sufficient Coiling...and if you don't want to fight a certain Pokemon at that moment, Dragon Tail it away.

Was fucking amazing for me. My Serperior singlehandedly destroyed Cynthia's team even though it was a lower level than all her Pokemon.

Pure support starters aren't very good, as supporting is the least valuable role for ingame play due to the lack of difficulty, thus need, for what effectively becomes a wasted team slot.

Before it becomes Serperior, it's one of the worst starters to use. Weak offense and not enough bulk to offset its piss-poor typing.
After, though (and it is quite the investment for what are relatively low returns given the amount of investment that could have been given to other Pokemon like Chandelure/Volcarona/etc), it has enough speed and bulk to be useful.

It can run Coil for its only decent boosting move [Growth is terrible outside Sun, you use it because you have nothing better], but that only leaves you breaking even with other starter's/Pokemon's power level.

Serperior can do a lot of neat things and can be good support, but is probably the worst starter choice of any Pokemon game for an in-game run.

Indeed. While its Ice weakness makes it bad in competition, its an absolute wrecking machine in-game. My only regret was the slight autism problem having two Grass types on my team, he and Roserade.

I never understand why people complain about snivy, or any starter for that matter, performing badly ingame. I've used every starter in playthroughs before and they're almost always one of the most reliable members of my team. It makes me think that people complaining about a starter being bad is just bad at the game.

Stalling is a waste of time when all you're fighting is dumb game AI. Why would you take the more convoluted and time wasting route when almost nothing in the game is that much of a challenge/can be dealt with more easily with a better pokemon?

I don't need to trust you, I've used snivy before. It gets peaf tornado pretty early which is acceptable until it evolves. Granted it's been a while since I've used it, but I don't remember servine being anywhere near below average compared to the rest of my team. I always keep them all even leveled too. You're exaggerating how bad it is.
