Is it possible the symbol on its chest could mean something?
Could it be a crest and shed it's shell into a shield?

I did the same after seeing the evo.

Froakie grew on me more and more after seeing all that implied ninja background but now its evolution completely converted me.

Why has nobody mentioned that this is supposed to be a bulky tanky grass/dark type?

Dark just got another weakness too. That's how many weaknesses? 7? I'm picking Chespin, but this thing is gonna be trash, it wont survive anywhere, much less be tanky.

I think you are forgetting that Dark type does not mean it has to be evil. Dark is more of a sneaky/dirt fighting type. He could be happy, sly, manic, or whatever.
