I think you guys should keep in mind these are middle evolutions, they are a transition point from stage 1 to 3. Granted, they could look better, the whole point of evolution in pokemon is to make a pokemon stronger by turning it into some bigger, badder monster.
Take chespin's morbidly obese evo, I'll admit he's my least favorite of the three, but I like the angle they're going with him being fatter. Why? It presents the opportunity to have his final evo be some giant bulky beast. I'm even hoping chespin's final evo gets the secondary rock type from this change in theme.
But what do I know.
