He often gave May one on one talks whenever she was feeling down from her rookie mistakes.

Hoenn's GF arc basically had two episode characters making a comeback in the festival, such as the Phantom, and Grace.
While admittedly, it was a worse arc compared to the Hoenn GF, the Kanto GF was more focused on May beating her long lasting rivals throughout AG.
Only to lose to Solidad, because her coordination style was pure aggro.
This is what I liked about AG because in the few episodes after, she REALLY did not want to train with Ash anymore, due to her realizing that her style was basically borrowed from Ash.
...I kinda dribbled on there for a bit, but that's my two cents as to why it's not a rehash.
