Before gen 5, I could name every single Pokemon, or at least know the name if I saw it. I never did get around to memorizing most of gen 5, and have too look them up every time someone talks about them. I had to force myself through B/W, and I never got around to playing B2/W2.

Whenever I see Vanillite I always remember that South Park episode that did a parody of Pokemon. You know, where one of the pokes was basically just a shoe. Vanillite to me just seems like GF actually putting a shoe into the game as a Pokemon.

For me, The first stages are some of my favourite, I'm indifferent about the middle stages and the final stages are some of my least favourite. Honestly, the only starter pokemon which design got progressively better for me was Turtwig.

Mudkip a shit, Treeko a Bro, Torchic is okay.
Charmander and Squirtle are Pimptastic, Bulbasaur as species is pretty much completely braindead look at their vacant expressions.
Piplup, Chimchar and Turtwig are actually all good but none of them are amazing.
Cyndaquil, Chikorita are ok, Totodile is sweet.
Snivy and Tepig are cool, Oshawott is ugly as my dick.

Gen 3 > Gen 2 (only because of Chikorita, Both Cyndaquil and Totodile were amazing) > Gen 1 = Gen 4 (both are very good, just Gen 3 and 2 were better for in my opinion) > Gen 5 (Only Oshawott is worth using)

You know whenever starter comparisons come up I always default to my experience playing GSC and they were just extremely boring in every possible way.

HGSS helped a bit, but they're still just kind of okay at best.

I don't even remember what starter I picked in Black 2.

I think Gen III had the ugliest final evos (besides Blaziken) but they're like a purposeful ugly. Swampert is mad ugly but he's still my favorite water evo.

Consider, Blaziken, Torterra and Feraligatr, in Unova, land of OP beasts. Blaziken would only be marginally better than Emboar, Torterra would be outclassed by Liligant (not even the secondary type saves him), Feraligatr would be outclassed by Jellicent (which btw has roughly thr same SpA as Feraligatr)
