GBA didnt have a big of a base as much as the DS did. And still, 3rd gen managed to be the best selling games of the GBA, something that 4th gen didnt accomplish

the majority of the gen 1 + 2 audience were now 'too cool for pokemon'. and it didnt grab the next generation the way gen 4 and 5 did. if you only count people who bought gen 1, you'd find gen 4 would be even lower, but gen 4 introduced a lot of new fans to the franchise, as did BW.

XY will sell great, its got the people who've been there from the start, the kids who started with BW, new kids and quite a few nostalgic hipsters.

tl;dr gen 3 wasnt the best, but the sales have nothing to do with it

Diamond/Pearl actually came out 2-3 years after the DS was initially released and a few months after the new DS (Lite) came out and the DS's popularity was rising.
That's very similar to what's occurring right now.
>X/Y comes out a couple years after the initial console release
>price drop/XL/games bring hype to 3DS
>more people buying the console means more people buying X/Y
Also, X/Y will boost sales simply because it's Pokemon. It's been a major factor in Nintendo's handheld console sales since its release.

VGChartz's official site has the three pegged down at 31.37 million, and Yellow with 14.64 million. Even with the remakes added to 2, 3 or 4, they still wouldn't top the first gen.

Wikipedia says that Red and Blue sold around 8 million units in the United States in 1997, a year before they actually released Stateside. So yeah, probably not the most reliable metric to use.

I REALLY want it to sell well, especially since its launching simultaneously worldwide. They finally realized they needed an online presence, and they're putting faith in it.

I'm afraid if it doesn't sell great we won't get another simultaneous release again

Yes, Gen1 sold better than Gen5. And more people watch reality TV than Toonami. Does that make reality TV good? More people saw Michael Bay's last shit on the Transformers franchise than the awesome, material-respecting movie that Marvel Studios gave Captain America the same year, but does that make the most recent Transformers good? More people eat at McDonald's than at local family restaurants, to say nothing of five-star restaurants, but does that mean the best food comes off the grills at Mickey D's?
