I didn't like Chespin's middle at first, but he's growing on me. Its not like its the first time a starter's gotten an awkward middle stage. I mean, look at Croconaw, did anyone seriously expect Totodile to go from an adorable mischievous crocodile to some baby caveman diaper fatass? At least Feraligatr looks alright.
