We've never had to before. Japanese games always came out forever in advance.
While it is definitely more exciting to go in blind, there's also the fact that you don't want to waste time on something that, while cool looking, winds up useless, then you need to raise something else to fill that void spot.
Some just like having order, figuring out their team in advance and planning how they want to build their in-game team ahead of time.
