I haven't played any Pokemon games since the release of Gold and Silver.

I plan on getting X/Y, but I'm wondering, should I play any of the more recent titles to get up to speed with the changes in the series or should I go in blind?

Just go in blind. On the assumption the new generation is a continuation of the trend of each gen getting mechanically better then playing the previous gens now can only make the new games less fun. Just go in fresh and carefree to the latest and hopefully greatest, and if you need more Pokemon adventures once you've done everything then consider going back.

You will need one of a 3DS, a 3DS XL or a 2DS. The 2DS being the 3DS variant that lacks the 3D support coming out this october and not just an old DS.

My roommate has only ever played Red / Fire Red, and they're getting XY so I'd say why not, it might even be more fun to discover even hundreds of more pokemon that way.

If you do, always play "3rd" versions.

Platinum over Diamond and Pearl

Emerald over Ruby/Sapphire

And perhaps B/W2 over Black/Whote1.

Alright I'll go in blind then. I actually still have gold and just dug it out for the first time in years but the save battery died. I was going to go through that again but unless I go in one sitting that ain't happening.

I'm pretty fucking fired up for the games either way. Having taken a liking to the SMT games over the past few years, which are pretty much the same thing in a lot of ways, I'm looking forward to see how much has changed and all the new stuff.

BW2 don't really replace BW1, a lot of the story hooks play on the assumption you probably played the first game too. Unlike Emerald and Platinum they're actually sequels rather than refined replacements. And honestly I didn't enjoy BW2 as much as BW1 either anyway.

I'd say play the new games. Then play Emerald, Platinum, Black/White and then BW2

The reason I saw B/W2 is because someone who hasn't played in a few generations would probably like to see some previous generation pokemon in their journey.
