I've always picked the water type first. I don't even like water types that much, but most of the time I prefer the starters, design-wise. And the few times I prefer one of the other starters, it's the one my brother wants, and we have a thing where we always pick a different starter.

I'll be away from him this year, so he's not an influence this time around, but I still might pick Froakie. I'm on the fence between him and Chespin, and I think I'm leaning towards the latter for something new. Depends on the final stage.

Will probably go with Chespin this generation.

I don't have to worry about the Kanto starter as I manged to obtain all starter pokemon in B/W, so I'll just transfer them over.

I boxed Oshawot as soon as i caught another pokemon though. I just don't like any of the gen 5 starters enough to keep them over all the other cool pokemon in gen 5.

Now I'm going with Chespin because I've never used the Grass Starter my first time through, plus it is almost surely going to be a tank if it has good defense and speed stats.

This is how I chose, it isn't an accurate reflection of how I rank them.
Squirtle, next Bulbasaur, last Charmander.
Totodile, next Chikorita, last Cyndaquil.
Mudkip. Never chose Treecko or Torchic.
Chimchar. Turtwig. Never Piplup except for breeding purposes.
Snivy, reset game early. Tepig. Never Oshawott, but it was tempting.

Gen6? Probably Fennekin. Next game/run Froakie. Chespin only if it has a good final evo.

I figure that Water's such a common type that I'd be able to pick up a decent Water Pokemon along the way meanwhile I dislike picking Grass since they're usually shit offensively.

It never existed. Froakie is superior, Fennekin equally so but was brought down by negative publicity (furbait! furbait! fawken furries and oh god huge head).

IMO, Chespin redeemed himself with the middle evolution, I actually like it more now.

I just hope we don't get bad move pools or badly distributed stats. Not every starter has to be UU or higher. Ex. Typhosion doesn't deserve to struggle with only Eruption, Fire Blast, Focus Blast and Solar Beam (on Sunny Day teams).
