Anyone else slightly disappointed that this time around they have Red start with Charmander instead? In the game it was almost considered canon he started with Bulbasaur.

The entire point of having a selection of starters was that you get to choose your destiny. They weren't "hinting" at a "canon" starter as that would defeat the purpose.

No, but it's mainly to do with the fact that most other "main" trainers in the games have their "signature"Pokemon as their highest leveled- Cynthia's Garchomp, Lorelei's Lapras, Steven's Metagross etc.
Going by this, it's not unreasonable to assume that game-wise Pikachu was Red's starter.

Maybe. You are aware that not every single trainer gets to choose one of 3 Pokémon when they start their journey, right?
Not everyone is a special snowflake that somehow knows a Pokémon professor.
Just look at all the random trainers/Gym leaders/whatever that dont have a "starter".

The key word is "could." All of these are possibilities, yes.

It doesn't /prove/ anything. You can't use these arguments to conclusively state that [whatever you want to think] is Red's official canon starter.

Wouldn't an official canon starter have to be stated, and not only indicated through nebulous hints, anyway?

Is there any basis for Onix being Brock's starter in the games, by the way? It's generally accepted that anime canon has no bearing on the games.

Canon wise the poke in yellow are red's true mons as evidenced by his pokemon in the later games when you face him. Meaning he starts with pikachu and picks up the rest.

Reason for charmander/charizard is because pikachu cannot go mega and so they went for the ash/gary dynamic when charizard took down blastoise.

The games are the original source material for Pokemon though.
As opposed to say, Dragon Ball where the manga is canon and scenes in DBZ which weren't in the manga are not canon.

All three starters were canonically obtained, albeit separately. Since it was a choice even within the same game, come GSC they just gave him all three of them. His Pikachu is merely a nod to the spin-off Yellow version, not a confirmation of its canonity.
