when I play with friends, we don't even need to state any rules, we use the pokemons we want with the movepools we have made ourselves and any of us even think of using cheap tactics such as sleep abuse or legendaries.

Smogon ban anything that increases evasion (besides acupressure for some reason), not because it's overpowered but because it reduces it to a game of luck.
Although Showderp seems to show it can be pretty overpowered, and fighting paraflinchers is about luck too...

There are loads of bulky ice types (Regice, Articuno, Walrein, Cloyster, Lapras, Abomasnow, sort of Dewgong, Vanilluxe and Glaceon, 9 out of 18 fully-evolved ice types), the problem is that it's almost impossible to use any of them defensively because they have so many weaknesses.

The tiers are entirely based on how often the pokemon are used in the 'anything that isn't banned is allowed' tier.

'Ubers' is functionally a banlist, but you can use anything there.

'overused' is the portion of the remaining pokemon that are used the most often.

'Underused' 'rarelyused' and 'neverused' are all based on a decreasing frequency of use when other pokemon is allowed, and the entire point of the tiers is to create metagames where the pokemon that people otherwise don't use get some playtime, and to make it so you aren't seeing every team with pokemon drawn from the same pool of 20.

But they banned drizzle/swift swim combo.

They didn't ban Drought/Chlorophyll combo.

There is no reason for snow cloak to be banned just because of sand veil.

The funny thing is that they once mentioned that they weren't going to ban anything more specific than pokemon (to the point of banning entire pokemon entirely because of at-the-time unreleased dreamworld abilities) because otherwise people would cry for overspecific bans.

Then when they DID include overspecific bans, they kept doing overgeneral bans alongside them and it ended up being just amazingly stupid.

As long as drizzle/swift swim is banned, no other overgeneral ban (like snow cloak because of sandveil) makes any sense. Either all permaweather speed boosts should be banned, or evasion abilities should be banned on a case-by-case basis.

Aldaron's proposal was the only complex ban smogon ever encountered. It was necessary because, as opposed to rain SS being broken, chloroSun is not.
Besides, all evasion-boosting abilities are banned, like the moves ban. It's not because of complex rules or broken-ness, it's because their policy removed evasion moves, so evasion abilities were kinda forced.
Btw, "overspecific" bans existed since gen III, when soul dew was banned.

Most of the people that shit on Smogon don't really know anything about it besides tiers and that there are some fags that copypaste sets and they think that's what everyone does.

They then complain about "b-but I can't use my bros!" without realizing that Smogon tiers are so you can actually use your bros without getting OHK'd by a Choice Band Scizor or something. You can still use your NU bro Pokemon in OU too, there's nothing stopping you. Most people that copypaste sets don't even use them well enough to get the most out of them anyway.

So, basically they just hate it to hate it and don't actually try to understand it. Some also go "muh sleep and evasion"

The main thing i have against smogon is:

1.-They are a bunch of over-inflated ego retards.
Both as individuals and as community -attitude of "We have the holy right of ban/make up shit for whatever reason because we're Smogon"

2.-And the fact most people just copy-paste builds.
How they often fail to see/dismiss variable ways of using certain pokemon and tend to generalize everything, thus over-centralizing the metagame due to "usage" shenanigans.

The idea of a community moderated metagame is not bad per se, but Smogon implemented it horribly.

In the end, it's only as big as people tend to use said rules.
By the way, what happened to that /vp/ community tier balance?

Truth ( == what actually is) cannot be decided by majority vote, and if you ask the "average" player what mechanic/strategy in a game is over/underpowered you don't get useful answers at all. You can get a grasp on what the playerbase considers "fun", but powerlevel adjustment must be left to professionals. If a mechanic is acceptable when used by a good player then it cannot be overpowered in the hands of an average player, but you can't guarantee the opposite.

There's the problem.

Now at the beginning of 5th gen many things were overlooked/done wrong, and most didn't even noted until smogon pointed out things like shell break, thus the over usage of cloyster until weather teams were rampant.

I played competitively immediately after it's release and datamining nonstop for a couple of months, so i saw the metagame quickly evolve and generalize as soon as Tournament sites (not just smogon) made updates.

The main problem I have with Smogon is that any idiot can see their elitist banning system doesn't work. Nobody is interested in balancing a whole, just protecting their own strategies, and so voting on certain bans only involves the tryhards.

My entire experience with Smogon is observing ways to ensure Sandstorm teams are never beaten. Get rid of rain, it counters Sand teams. Get rid of Blaziken, it wrecks Sand teams. Get rid of Garchomp, it proves Sand is too good.

But whatever you do, at no point, EVER just ban permanent Sandstorm. That would be crazy!

It proved itself with random matchup right now which is just EVASION EVASION EVASION and the PO test with smogon rules with evasion: meta is essentially evasion < anti-evasion < normal teams < evasion < anti-evasion, etc...
It removes a fuckton of playstyles. You cannot play without it. That's the signs of something being broken.

Thing is that the only people who abuse evasion in VGC or GBU tend to a bit shit, since there's always something better you could be doing. Brightpowder on your Garchomp lets it survive an extra turn about 30% (?) of the time, while Focus Sash will almost definitely let it attack again.

Lel at people who cry about evasion (among other moves) on Random Matchup. I've played hundreds of matches and have barely ran into people with evasion moves or teams and strategies based around them. I don't use them and my team wasn't formulated with countering evasion users at all and I still have a high win rate ratio. Also raising your evasion level doesn't mean your opponent automatically wins; you still have a chance to hit the opponent and there are good moves & abilities on multiple pokemon that increase your accuracy. Maybe if you guys put a little more thought into your teams instead of copypasting from smogon it wouldn't be such a problem.

Well you guys may have a point but I stand by the points I was trying to make. The entirety of my post wasn't about copypasting. I was about the diversity in pokemon that allows you to overcome a strategy that isn't even common in an environment that doesn't ban it from my personal experience. Evasion is a silly thing to worry about. This is coming from a person who constantly EV trains, breeds for IVs and egg moves and has tried bring out the best of the majority of existing pokemon.

Smogon are all unskilled scrubs.

They all rely on a single strategy (Stealth Rock abuse and Sandstorms) and when there's anything that can counter it, they ban it like the scrubs they are.

Variation and creativity is an alien concept to them, and as such they ban everything that's different from their precious meta.

They claim to be the ultimate pokemon players, but in reality they're the weakest of them all. They're on the same skill level as people who loses to Magikarp only teams.

It was not the majority of the time, but many of my battles were against weather based teams. even when evasion did come up (rarely) the pokemon would either get hit the same turn or turn after or I would have useful moves like hone claws on a Krookodile or Coil on Serperior (People never see it coming it has won me alot of matches in combination with leech seed) I also ran with venemoth at times with the compound eyes ability. I'm just trying to point out how silly the grief over evasion is. It's a waste of a moveslot anyways, but it's still fun.

they don't want to open a can of worms with the ability ban, since it would lead to people saying "SWARM SCIZOR FOR UU" "I WANT TO USE GUTS HERACROSS IN RU" "WHY ISN'T MY WATER ABSORB POLITOED IN NU?".

Imagine all the potential variations complex bans would have to cover, if taken to the extreme. Perhaps a no-IV, half-EV, bug-plate-only Arceus without Judgement is weak enough to be in OU tier, but only if it doesn't have a Garchomp or Tyranitar on the team, unless they have half-IVs too...

A line needs to be drawn in the sand, for sanity's sake. Feel free to disagree on the specifics of where that line should go, but the line itself needs to be present.

I run an evasion team in Ubers.
It's vastly overpowered and nigh uncounterable outside of freak luck and Nasty Plot Thundurus-T in the rain.
