Pretty much you play as either Brendan or May sometime after one of them becomes Champion (This takes place between Gen 3 and 4 in the timeline), but the Champ (The one you play as) heads to Kanto seeking a new challenge and leaves their old Pokemon behind, while the rival gets an interest in battling again and comes with you
Also Bill invents Fused Pokemon at some point and now they're kinda all over the place
