I want my Pokemon to look distinctly like the animals they are based on while still having unique fantastical flairs. This means that I don't want it to be ultra-realistic but at the same time I don't want to remove things that will remove the resemblance to its inspiration.
For example, I wouldn't want to change squirtle's colour to a more realistic muddy green, but I don't want its shell removed either. The shell makes it distinctly a turtle, the blue coloration is the flavor. There's no contradiction there, stop being so black and white.
