My teams normally go

Grass
Water
Fire
Flying
Electric
Ice/Fighting/Psychic/Steel/Ground/Bug/Dark

If there are dual types that cover weaknesses or just add more resistances then that's okay too.

I don't normally even get a Grass Type, I prefer an Electric type for whatever reason. I just find Grass below average overall. I used Starmie, Arcanine and Jolteon during W2. They worked fine.

I always have a water and grass on my team, if I remember correctly the only fire type I've ever really kept was Simisear. I normally get a flying type instead, I guess.

Gen 3 was Flygon, Gen 5 was Golurk.

Always use a water, if it isn't my starter in the first place
Usually but not always use fire
Grass is take or leave

The most recent run with all three was my first Black 2 run: Samurott, Chandelure, and Sawsbuck

Also with the exception of starters I don't like using monotyped Pokemon unless I'm either really fond of them or they're really good.

Just saying you guys are wasting a perfectly good STAB. I won't say I haven't, I used a Linoone in Gen 3, the utility was just beautiful. Your call if you don't want a Water Type and if you do, and it's a special attacker (I don't want to even hear about Surf Gyarados) do yourself a favour and teach it Surf as soon as you can.

Jesus. If it's a special attacker, surf is great for coverage. Even if it's just normally effective it's pretty strong and it hits every pokemon on the opposing side. You get some coverage.

Surf has perfect accuracy and much more PP, making it much more useful in-game. In the meta, where hitting hard is a priority, Hydro Pump is used, but Surf has almost the same damage output over many turns (95 * 100% = 95, 120 * 80% = 96.) and PP so you don't have to run back to the Pokemon Center.
