Nah, just hold down as soon as the ball appeared and then add holding A+B as it started shaking, then wiggle back and forth on the d-pad in rhythm with the ball shaking.

There were still soft reset commands. I think every Nintendo console has one? Except maybe the Wii. Ex. on the GC it's Start+B+X, on the DS it's fucking EVERYTHING.
