Remember when charmander used to have spines coming out of its back? Why did they get rid of that?

Actually it is a spike/spine/whatever - its Gen 1 back sprite even shows it. It was one of the early design changes made to the Generation 1 Pokémon. (For example, Mr. Mime's fingers going from four to five.)
