X/Y: Cartridge vs Download

No.13875624 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
I just got my 3DS and I'm trying to figure out how this whole SD card thing works, particularly in terms of the new Pokemon games.

The data is machine-locked, but you can back up the SD card / copy it to another card and use it in your same 3DS, so you have multiple personal game cartridges? I'd use my AceKard like this for special events in Gen IV.

Do cartridge games save their files on themselves or on the card? Can you migrate a cartridge to a card?

I imagine they're playing a delicate game to balance usefulness with anti-piracy. Does anyone prefer a download over a cartridge or vice versa? I heard there were issues with Animal Crossing's downloadable version. What about updates, is that even a thing? I only got this system for Pokemon X/Y and I'll probably get Animal Crossing to kill the next 24 days, but I don't know if I should go pre-order a cartridge or if we get a download day-of.
