Shouldn't Groudon be a Fire Pokemon instead?

I mean, it's red, and obviously affiliated with fire.

It's red because it is affiliated with lava/magma. When lava cools it becomes rock. The ground is made of rocks.

Because it's based on Behemoth, the beast of the earth from Hebrew mythology. Leviathan is Kyogre. Ziz is Rayquaza. Also, it exists to create and expand the earth, according to Pokemon mythology. Therefore, ground type.

Because Fire is just combusting oxygen, and Groudon formed the land. It's not like you can do that with oxygen. Sure, fire was involved, but that's like saying a Grass types should be Water because they need water to survive.

Team Magma's plan was to create more land, so It would be a really big rock. A really big rock could be considered the ground. (ex. Hawaii, Japan, ect.)

It's not completely exclusive, but the only other pokemon to learn it are two volcano-themed pokemon (Entei and Campurt) and then the Typhlosion line which seems to be tossed in just to give him more move variety.

Eruption wasn't even exclusive to Groudon, neither was Water Spout to Kyogre in that gen.

Groudon represents earth, all the earth, just like Kyogre represents the oceans and Rayquaza the skies.
Magma is just a part of the earth, just like mountains and deserts also are.
As for the red color it's because a brown ruby makes no sense.

So Kyogre should be part Flying, because water evaporates? I don't think so. In any case, magma is superheated earth, so it's as much fire as Electric types are, because that's superheated air.

So Scald shouldn't be Water, because it's hot? Eruption implies that magma is jettisoned into the atmosphere, where it becomes lava. It's a Fire-type move because it's superheated. Magma itself has nothing to do with fire, as much as anything else hot has to do with fire. Magma can start fires, but it's not fire, no matter what type Eruption is. Most people associate getting drenched with lava with burning.

Magma is only magma BEFORE it's exposed to the surface. After it's out of the earth, it's lava. Also, it's counted as fire-type because it's incredibly hot and will, you know, set stuff on fire or burn stuff, among other things.

But, no, Groudon doesn't have control over magma. He created land by drying up the oceans.
