You do realize that so far, Garchomp's Mega Evolution looks like shit competitively? One of Garchomp's main assets was its unique Speed tier. MegaGarchomp is said to be slower and if that means as little as 5 base stat points, Garchomp is suddenly in an very unfortunate Speed tier even below Hydreigon. And look how that worked out...

Yeah I think tat's part of the genereal idea: As MegaEvolutions aren't real evolutions, they can add them during a gen, just like they added formes. That way, they can make games like remakes or the famous "third game" more exciting to players which -- as they said in OP's interview -- are easily distracted nowadays.
