Despite popular opinion, Gen II.
All pokemon given birth in this generation are lacking in design and story. The starter pokemon are the most unappealing of all the generations and despite the video games being rich in gameplay, many of the new features from gen II had been poorly implemented

Gen IV, Diamond/Pearl. It added nothing of lasting value to the series, the things it did add were poorly implemented and buggy as hell, most of the pokemon had a boring dark purple/grey/blue/black color scheme, and the game was, overall, boring. In fact, I blame it for all the "genwunner" talk, as that was the newest pokemon game when it started to become a thing. That said, I haven't played platinum.

The new evolutions introduced looked like shit they doodled in twenty minutes, then called a day.

Mt. Coronet and Defog were the shittiest shit things in pokemon since Hoenn's endless surfing.

D/P take the cake as worst games by far. Platinum was cool, nothing special.

That's true Gen II wasn't buggy.
Yet for example the fact that one ended the Johto region with pokemons only at around lvl40~50 and then ended Kanto on a even shorter ride was like an optical illusion more than a improvement of gameplay time.

Yeah, it's pretty fucking hard to play older gens now without the split. Gen IV brought me back to pokemon, so I'm a bit biased in whole but that aspect is huge.

I originally put "aside from the phys/special split, which is just meta stuff" in my post, but I think I took it out and forgot. and the online play was poorly implemented. trading was annoying and a few bugs, though I can't speak much for online battling. Even then, compare it to the previous gens: gen II had eggs, the day/night system,hold items, and the steel and dark type. Gen III had pokemon contests, double battles, natures, and abilities. Gen IV has nothing compared to those kinds of additions.

If I were to guess, I'd say it's the similar use of warm colours and possibly seemingly hippy motives (enviornment / animal welfare) of the enemy teams that draws Gen III to Gen V.
IV has the worst designs, (overambitious?) poorly paced story and overall ran.

I guess I'm especially bitter because they ruined some of my favourite pokemon with shittily designed evolutions e.g Togekiss, Magmortar, Mamoswine

Obviously the games have been getting better in terms of mechanics. But for it's time, gen 5 was the worst. It just didn't add anything to the series. The only great thing about it was a decent attempt at a story, but after you play it once, you stop giving a shit about the story and mash A throughout any dialogue.

For me, gen 3 was a great generation. Hoenn was a great region (and still tied for the best with Sinnoh), the Gamecube games were God-tier, the speed and animations in the games were very fluid, finding the regis was great, great Pokemon designs (this one is subjective), trick house, modern EV/IV system, standard berry/TM list, first usable PC box system, etc.

but FUCK diamond and pearl. I cannot for the life of me give a rats ass about these gens. they are the most boring garbage i have ever had the displeasure of trying to sit through. It made me question why I even like pokemon at all. I simply cannot bring myself to finish gen 4.

5 did do interesting things with competitive battling. Unless you play by smogons silly rules

VGC rules however (the rules the game was balanced for) do show some cool fixes compared to gen iv.

I don't like gen 4 that much, but if you're playing made up fan made rules (Smogon) of course you'll have those complaints. Play the official rules (VGC, random matchup etc) you'll see the game is balanced just fine, Rhyperior IS usable and sneaky pebbles really aren't that bad

RSE deserved the lowest sales; didn't immediately replace the Battle Tower in Ruby and Sapphire, no visible day/night system, and the one that was set in place hardly affected anything, water routes, terrible soundtrack, worst rivals of any region.
