you're interpreting that wrongly, the speeding up is just the game in general. for example they talk about getting the running shoes from the start, having rollerblades and having fast moving battles

Isn't this a good thing?

Grinding is anti-fun and I'm sure the idea is to make the journey more engaging and training a breeze to the point of having more teams to battle online.

Part of the reason why I never went online in Diamond and Pearl is because my Pokémon were ridiculously underleveled and grinding was terrible as shit even with a Lucky Egg.

While that was my immediate suspicion, in another interview (someone else might have the one I mean, I forget which it is) Masuda said "We don't mean literally just shortening the game. It's more about having a lot more happen within shorter time frames."

I.e., no sluggishness, constant excitement and stimulation. Whether he was spouting corporate doubletalk and the game is in fact an afternoon-long cakewalk remains to be seen.
