The Magnemite line relies on the earth's natural magnetic field to levitate off the ground, and thus, Ground attacks fuck with seismic and magnetic activity, thus damaging the Pokemon. Magnet Rise is them exerting for a short period of time their own magnetic field, which is why it becomes immune to Ground and why it is only a few turns.
