And it's not that there's "nothing to do" in Kanto (even though that's true), but the region itself is boring. Every town might as well be the same, just with different geography. Nothing stands out about it.
Look at Hoenn, which, ecologically, was the most diverse (beaches, forests with huge trees, mountains, volcanoes, underwater, hidden caverns, etc.). Look at Sinnoh (snow villages, a huge centerpiece mountin, swamps, solar-panel cities, battle/resort island). And even hand-holding Unova (dock/port cities, deserts, an airport, electric caves, towers, seasons that really change things). All of these regions shit on Kanto, and Kalos is already looking like it'll do the same.
