Rhyhorn and Gogoat are both big and can reasonably support a teenager. A Pidgey or Finneon cannot.

To be relevant, though, it's because only a handful of pokemon can be ridden, while basically every flying and water type can learn fly and surf, respectively.

They could use blue bird for shit like that. Or for dodrio they could let the trainer get on it as it jumps off screen. Goldeen just have the trainer jump into the water holding on to it. Heck they have had trainers submerged in water already just add a poke in the front.

Pidgey could use a comedic effect with the trainer grabbing on to it's leg as the pidgey is sweating and struggling as it takes off. If that is not acceptable again just default it to blue bird.

I'm talking about Crobat, Ho-oh and Lugia. They really were the only ones. All other Flying-types shared the same sprite.

It will cost hundreds of dollars and atleast a day of man hours, when the time could have better been spent improving game mechanics.

OP, they would have to make special models for every Pokemon that can learn Surf, and furthermore, a lot of them wouldn't fucking make sense with the trainer sitting on top of them (consider Squirtle or fucking Goldeen).

The blob is meant to abstractly represent the Pokemon as being able to carry the trainer on its back. Same goes for flying Pokemon - the animation wouldn't make much sense for a Spearow or some of the weirder mons that can learn Fly.

With riding that's something specific that's relevant to the Pokemon you are riding. For special sprites for surfing/flying is just a small thing that in the end, doesn't matter that much.
