They were, time and time again. They had a few missteps, mostly in Gen4, but other than that it's all been uphill since the beginning.

I think my favourite overall is Ho-Oh. I just fucking love how it's a based on a Chinese Pheasant and a Phoenix for some reason.

And I'd probably say that Ecruteak City is my favourite place out of all the Pokemon games.
I wish they would do more traditional Asian folkloric Pokemon (Like Froslass and Ninetales) and places but I'm pretty happy X/Y is set in Europe.

Articuno is very nice. It was my favorite legendary bird of Gen 1.
You know though, the other legendaries in future generations aren't bad.
The Regi's were pretty cool, although a little bit too uncessarily cryptic to obtain.
The Kami trio are excellent.
