Also why is Shaymin normally considered the "Mew" of Gen IV over Manaphy?

Because Manaphy can breed. Therefore it's not considered a "Mew". Shaymin is Grass/Psychic so it should be among the others.

I guess they had to pick either Manaphy or Shaymin, and Shaymin is much harder to get a hold of, plus you can get a dex entry for Manaphy in-game in Platinum making it not really that hidden.

Shaymin is a hedgehog with grass instead of quills rather than a pixie-like creature, and has another forme, while Manaphy is a pixie-like creature with 100 across the board.

Shaymin is the one less like the others as of the initial release, and Skymin was the one that sealed the deal. Victini being known at the beggining of the gen, just like Manaphy, just sealed the deal.
