Alright, one thing I do have to give it up to Pokemon

At least the english names of Pokemon are consistent and don't get mixed up

>Lordknightmon/Rhodeknightmon/Crusadermon
>Lilithmon/Laylamon

and now Ba'almon is getting his name changed to Reapmon, which I think Reapermon is a wonderful name for him; but there is already a Reapermon in english so they took out the "er" and made a "new" name

congrats Pokemon, you win in english naming

They should really learn to keep the names they have instead of retconning them. This is why I still say Phoenixmon since it makes better sense to me. (and I refuse to use the other name because it's the same as Ho-oh) I have no idea what I should think on that Royal Knight. Last I knew, it's name was retconned to LoadKnightmon (which I would count as a translation error) I would very much prefer if it was LordKnightmon, but no one can decide what it should be. Laylamon? Screw you, it's Lilithmon. Maybe it's just better to just call it what I want to call it.

This is why Digimon is so much less successful: Bandai doesn't give a fuck about making a consistent, quality experience across regions. Some Digimon have different names in different media; for example Lilithmon was called as such in games prior to this.

Pretty much, they basically can't keep their shit straight. Pokemon's kept its appeal partly from being a big consistent thing that it's easy to get involved in and remain attached to while Digimon just seems to go all over the place.

I suppose the virtual pet fad dying out hasn't helped, there isn't really a market for Digimon outside of ghetto portables these days. Though if it was up to me I'd probably develop a Digimon smartphone app. That doesn't suck, and is made to make you feel like you actually have a monster living in your phone.

I don't think Digimon was ever about the tamagotchi here. It was the show that popularized it. It might be different in Japan. Regardless, most people left it because it became too serious, which baffles me when people cry about Pokemon not appealing to them. I know the true reason, though: it's easier to appeal to younger kids than older ones, they're too fickle. I guess Japan doesn't have that sort of thing, or if they do, it's not as much of a gap as it is here. They have a much wider spectrum of things, while you're either a kid and stupid here, or you're an adult and you're still stupid, but now it's laced with sex and cussing. (what, it's true)

Houou is a legendary Chinese creature somewhat reminiscent of the phoenix, and what the Digimon in question is based on, you dolt.

There is a pretty good app for android phones called Digimon Unlimited which is based off of the pendulums. I wouldn't say it's like really having a monster living in your phone, but it's pretty cool for fans of the virtual pets.

I know that, but that doesn't make it better. And no, I don't care if that was it's JP name, too. Phoenixmon was fine, it didn't have to be changed. This is why I am torn with Crusadermon/LordKnightmon. The second makes better sense with what it evos from, but the first is what the localization originally called it. Although,it has an association to the Frontier dub, and I'd rather forget that mistake.

LordKnightmon is a tough one since its Japanese name is clearly a reference to three different things: Lord Knight (lord of the Knightmon, as shown in the show), Load (due to the nature of its attacks with its arm), and Rhodonite.

LordKnightmon is probably the best among the choices, as Rhodonitemon masks too much and Crusadermon... yeah, Frontier.

At least they fixed Kerpymon to Cherubimon in Frontier.

Actually Disney didn't have the rights to Digimon until season 4. I'm pretty sure season 3 was done by Saban.
