Yes, I had fun, but the game did not age gracefully. In fact, it aged terribly.
Gold fixed the game. It made it more diverse, gave you *real* options, unlike the previous one, it introduced two more types into the mix that *worked.*
Red and Blue were good for starting the series. For what they were at the time, it was amazing. However, so was Pong, and I've made Pong clones over the course of an afternoon in Processing.
The newer games, expansions, better graphics, more options and mechanics have completely improved upon the formula Red and Blue created. Just because they're the first games, and set the foundation doesn't mean they're the best. Anyone who argues they were probably hasn't even touched a Gameboy in 7+ years.
Nostalgia is powerful. It makes us think All That was hysterical (look at it now, it really isn't funny anymore), it makes us disappointed as we age and become more cynical and unable to be amazed by things the same way we were as kids.
Red and Blue aren't the best games in the world anymore. But they very well may be some of the most *important* games.
