Other than improving the game's balance, can someone explain to me how fairy is weak to steel? Is there some Japanese mythology of fairies dying at the hands of swords, or are we just supposed to accept this as given and be thankful that moves like flash cannon are no longer useless?

Why should type advantages matter outside of game balance? It's not like there's some in-game lore about why Ghost-types and Normal-types can't affect each other.

But there is real-world basis for why Ghost and Normal types can't affect each other. Same with Fighting. You try punching a ghost (were they to exist) and your arm would go right through it.
Type matchups make more sense than just "It's Pokemon, I ain't gotta explain shit."

It shouldn't matter though. Pokemon aren't situated in real life, and now we're bringing fictional ideas into a fictional world are trying to compare it to other fiction. Fairies could be super-effective against Water and Grass for no reason at all, because it really is just Pokemon.

Grass being super-effective against Water doesn't make much sense. Is it because plants absorb water? Shouldn't Normal be super-effective against Water then, since animals all drink water too?
There are plenty of matchups that don't make much sense, like Bug being super-effective against Psychic, or Water resisting Steel

Normal doesn't draw its inspiration from animals though. It's just normal, untyped, neutral.

Bugs are a common fear and disrupt the concentration of psychics.

Water resisting steel is a bit nonsensical, but then again the resistances don't really follow much real world baring, just the super-effectiveness. Though I guess it could be explained by steel eventually rusting to water and crumbling, but that seems more of a super effectiveness than a resistance.

It has to do with how psychics use the power of the mind. The mind is disrupted by fear, and people often fear insects and ghosts.
